Installing WordPress on THOST

1. Order a plan. Starter is enough for one WordPress site. Business gives you room for five, Pro has no limit. Pay by card through Stripe.
2. Create the website in the control panel at my.t-host.co.uk, choose PHP 8.4, and turn on SSL and the HTTPS redirect.
3. Click install on the new site's welcome page. WordPress is downloaded, a database is created, and the configuration is written for you. Your admin login is emailed to you.
4. Point your domain at us, either by using our nameservers ns1 and ns2.t-host.co.uk or by adding an A record at your existing DNS provider. Once it resolves, the Let's Encrypt certificate is issued automatically.
5. Log in at /wp-admin, choose a theme, and start publishing.

If you would rather install WordPress by hand, that works too: upload the files with FTP over TLS, create a database in the control panel and run the normal WordPress setup.

Moving an existing WordPress site

Moving a WordPress site is mostly a matter of copying two things: the files in your web root and the contents of the database. There are two common approaches.

With a backup plugin

Many people use a backup-and-restore plugin: install it on the old site, export a full backup, then install WordPress on THOST with the one-click installer, install the same plugin and import the backup. This handles the database, the search-and-replace of your old URL, and the uploads folder in one go.

By hand

Export the database from your old host, download the files over FTP, then create a site and a database in the THOST control panel, upload the files with FTP over TLS, import the database and edit wp-config.php with the new database name, user and password. Update your domain's DNS last, once you have checked the site on THOST.

Whichever route you take, keep your old hosting running until DNS has switched over and you have confirmed everything works. If you get stuck, email [email protected]. We are a very small team, but we reply as soon as we possibly can.

Keeping WordPress fast and safe on shared hosting

• Use a current PHP version. WordPress core, most themes and most plugins run well on PHP 8.4, and newer PHP releases are generally faster than older ones.
• Add a caching plugin. A page-cache plugin stores rendered pages as files so Apache can serve them without running PHP for every visitor.
• Keep plugins to what you use. Fewer plugins means fewer updates, fewer conflicts and less to go wrong. Remove anything inactive.
• Turn on automatic updates for minor WordPress releases and for plugins you trust. With the last three daily backups kept days, an update that misbehaves can be rolled back from the control panel.
• Use the HTTPS redirect and set your WordPress site URL to https:// so there is no mixed content.
• Check your statistics. Each site has AWStats visitor statistics, and your logs record real visitor IP addresses, which is useful when diagnosing traffic or abuse.
